meet the team: mads

Mads hails from the woods, oceans and fields of New England. It was from those places that they garnered a love of foodways- whether it was romping around in their Nonna's garden as a kid, working in small town kitchens in highschool or studying socio-ecological food systems for their undergrad. They can be seen carting veggies across town to the People's Fridge, grilling over campfires, and making dinner with friends. When they are (rarely) doing something unrelated to food, Mads is probably involved in a mutual aid project, working on leathercraft or chilling on their roof.

Why is food security important to you?

Food insecurity and hunger are an arbitrary barrier -a systemic policy failure- that are completely solvable. Food impacts all of us: it shapes our lives and relationships, it highlights our cultural roots, it gathers people together. It's hard to conceptualize a world where feeding people isn't deeply prioritized when there is so much more work to be done.

How did you get involved with Double Trellis?

I first heard about Double Trellis several years ago when Matt and I were introduced at Queer Soup Night. It immediately became evident that this was exactly the type of work I had always dreamt of being involved with: strengthening communities with healthy, dignified food through grassroots-level organizing. It took some time, but eventually the stars aligned and as I transitioned out of a job this past summer, a position opened up at DTFI. Total kismet!

What vegetable would you describe yourself as and why?

Mustard Greens- one part sweet, one part bitter, every part versatile and resilient.
